Concrete Driveways in Denver, CO

New driveways and replacements, specified for Front Range freeze-thaw and de-icing salt.

A driveway is the hardest-working flatwork on a property and the first to show whether it was specified properly. In Denver it has to survive two things a driveway in a mild climate does not: repeated freezing while saturated, and whatever gets spread on it in January.

Four numbers decide how it ages, and all four are set before the truck arrives.

Air entrainment is the one most worth understanding. Deliberately introduced microscopic air voids give freezing water somewhere to expand into instead of forcing the paste apart. Research on scaling resistance found that freeze-thaw cycling with plain water on the surface produced almost no scaling, while as little as one percent salt in the surface water caused considerable scaling, and that air-entrained concrete resisted that damage markedly better than non-entrained concrete. The important part for a homeowner: this is specified at the plant and cannot be added later. A driveway poured without it in this climate is on a clock.

Thickness and reinforcement follow from use. A driveway carrying nothing heavier than cars is a different slab from one that will take an RV or a delivery truck, and it is far cheaper to say so before the pour than to replace it after.

Joint spacing is the quiet one. Concrete will crack; control joints decide where. Cut too shallow or spaced too far apart and the slab cracks where it likes instead of where you planned.

On permits: in Denver, replacing a driveway in the same footprint with no change to the curb cut is generally treated as a like-for-like replacement, while a new or altered curb cut involves the public right of way and is a different process with its own requirements. Widening is also treated differently because it adds impervious surface and can affect drainage. Confirm your own case with Denver's development services before the work rather than after.

One piece of advice that saves money: do not let anyone throw de-icing salt on concrete in its first winter. New concrete has not finished gaining strength, and that first season is when scaling damage gets locked in.
